High / Low Cut
This work by Linda Linko is built from a cluster of painterly gestures that gather into a loosely structured composition. Rather than forming a fixed image, the elements appear as fragments—brushstrokes, blocks of color, and layered marks—that interact across the surface. Areas of dense pigment meet lighter passages where the underlying structure remains visible, allowing the process of making to remain present in the final form.
A deep green circular movement anchors the lower part of the composition, creating a visual weight that grounds the surrounding elements. Around it, vertical and angular strokes in rust, soft pink, grey, and black rise and shift direction, suggesting figures or architectural fragments without resolving into clear representation. A saturated blue form near the top introduces a moment of contrast, balancing the earthy palette and drawing the eye upward.
The composition moves between control and immediacy. Some marks appear deliberate and contained, while others feel spontaneous, almost provisional, as if added in response to the surrounding shapes. This tension between structure and openness allows the work to remain fluid, where the viewer’s perception shifts between abstract movement and fleeting suggestions of form.
In its textile translation, the composition is interpreted through hand-knotting using wool and silk. Variations in pile height reproduce the rhythm of the painted surface: raised areas correspond to heavier gestures, while lower cuts create quieter fields that recede visually. The contrast between materials introduces subtle shifts in light and texture, allowing the rug to retain the layered character and tactile energy of the original work.
“I like incompleteness. If everything’s polished to perfection, where’s the space for imagination?”
— Linda Linko
